Kennedy-Lugar Youth Exchange and Study Abroad Program

The Kennedy-Lugar Youth Exchange and Study Abroad Program is a U.S. Department of State-funded experience that allows high school students and recent graduates of high school to explore different cultures in countries with significant Muslim populations by living in those countries for one academic year. The program was the brainchild of Senator Ted Kennedy and Senator Richard Lugar as a way to promote cross-cultural understanding and harmony in response to the events of September 11, 2001. The first group of students from the U.S. who participated in this program lived abroad during the 2009-2010 school year. This coming school year, 65 students were given the opportunity to be a part in the experience. These students will represent the U.S. in various countries as youth ambassadors. By immersing ourselves in the culture of different countries, we hope to learn more about our host countries and to educate communities across the globe about American society.

In addition, the CBYX program and the NSLI-Y program are sponsored by the U.S. Department of State. The CBYX program sends American students to Germany to study for a year. The NSLI-Y program is a language-based program that sends high school U.S. students to many different countries for either a year-long program or a 6 week summer program. The languages offered on the NSLI-Y program are Arabic, Chinese, Korean, Russian, Hindi, Turkish, and Persian (Tajik).
